Senior/Principal Geotechnical Engineer Job Summary: Due to our expanding workload a leading international multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental consultancy are currently recruiting for a Senior or Principal Geotechnical Engineer to strengthen their Team in Birmingham. Responsibilities / Accountabilities: Hands on geotechnical engineering calculations and design;
Personal provision of high level advice and recommendations to clients;
Lead and manage specific projects;
Support, coach, mentor, motivate and encourage junior members of the wider team;
Financial management of projects;
Assistance with bids & fee quotes;
Occasional travel to and liaison with other offices and teams;
Business development;
Internal and external client liaison and development. Qualifications / Experience: Degree educated in Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology or other relevant related subject.
Ideally an MSc in Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Foundation Engineering or other relevant related subject.
Chartered CEng or CGeol.
A sound technical and practical knowledge of soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering and foundation engineering; plus some basic geo-environmental (land contamination) expertise would be an added advantage.
Expertise in the analysis, design and specification of most of the following; ground investigation, earthworks, dewatering, ground improvement and reinforcement, shallow foundations, deep foundations, pile foundations, anchorages, retaining structures, slopes, embankments, soil nails, geotechnical works associated with highways, bridges, buildings and structures including soil-structure interaction.
A detailed working knowledge of, and experience of using, BS EN1997 (Eurocode 7) and other relevant British Standards.
Expertise in the use of appropriate geotechnical software including; selection of soil parameters for design, the limitations of geotechnical data and application to engineering solutions.
Expertise in determining appropriate soil parameters for input onto Finite Element Analysis packages such as PLAXIS.
Ability to carry out, review and check; Desk Studies, Ground Investigation contract documents, Interpretative GI Reports, Ground Investigation Reports (GIRs), Geotechnical Design Reports (GDRs).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Added benefits would be an interest in business development, finite element analysis, Plaxis 2D, having acted as an Expert Witness, CSCS card and PTS trained.
Experience of working with, and managing project teams and where necessary acting as lead designer.
Ability to work to deadlines, within budget and to programme, to control costs and to effectively manage resources and change control
