The state education fund has a $20-million surplus and now lawmakers are working on what to do with the extra money. House Speaker Shap Smith says he thinks lawmakers owe it to their constituents to use the entirety of the surplus this year to buy down rates for property taxpayers. While others don t think that s the best use of the money. Lawmakers in the House Committee on Education will consider how best to use this surplus this week. On any given day, about 800 trucks drive through downtown Vergennes but that will soon change. A proposal, which was created by Vergennes Mayor Bill Benton, passed on Town Meeting Day. This will reroute some truck traffic from Route 22A to Route 7. Some community members did oppose the project, but now the next steps are being taken. Before construction begins on the By-Pass, the city is creating a task force to workout logistics and feasibility. Fewer Vermont students are picking up smoking and being exposed to secondhand smoke. That new data was released by the Vermont Health Department s Youth Risk Behavior Survey. 37 percent of students say they were directly exposed to secondhand smoke within the last week, down 4 percent from 2013. The Health Department reports 11 percent of Vermont students smoked a cigarette in the past 30 days, a 13 percent decrease from 2013.
Colchester Police are responding to a shooting near the Days Inn on Route 15. Police say a 36-year-old man, shot multiple times, was taken to the hospital. The shooting happened at around 9 am at a multi-unit building. Police say they do not have the shooter in custody. The investigation is ongoing. Colchester Police say there were indications that the shooter and victim might have known each other, and they have some leads on the suspect. They say it s too early to speculate on a motive for the shooting, or if the incident was drug-related. The other person at the home at the time was not injured.
Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on phone carriers to make robocall blocking technology available to landline and cellphone customers. Schumer says blocking technology can send an automated telemarketing call to a spam box, much like email spam-blockers do. He says the technology is needed because despite federal Do Not Call rules, hundreds of thousands of people continue to receive unwanted telemarketing calls.
