DRUGS: A 53-year-old prison officer has today been charged with misconduct in a public office and drugs offences. Julie Turton, who works at HMP Birmingham, along with ex-prisoner Arteef Hussain, 25, and his wife Shelah Arif, 25, were arrested as part of an investigation into allegations of drug dealing and theft at the prison between May 2011 and May 2013. HMP Birmingham in Winson Green Julie Turton, of Hembs Crescent, Hamstead, Birmingham has been charged with conspiracy to convey cannabis into a prison, supplying cannabis and misconduct in a public office.
Arteef Hussein, of Stoke Heath Prison, Market Drayton, Shropshire is charged with conspiracy to convey cannabis into a prison. Shelah Arif, a beautician, of Foxdale Grove, Kitts Green, Birmingham is charged with conspiracy to convey cannabis into a prison, and possession of cannabis with intent to supply. In addition, Julie s son, Sam Turton, 27, also a prison officer at HMP Birmingham, has been charged with three counts of theft.
All are due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates on Monday, October 28.
